2025-08-21 - How to Lead When You Don't Have All the Answers

There's a myth that leaders must always know exactly what to do, no matter what the circumstances. I used to believe it myself - that if I admitted uncertainty, people would lose confidence in me.

Then came the day I was faced with a crisis I could not fix overnight. A teacher had resigned suddenly, parents were calling for answers, and the staff looked to me for direction. The truth was, I didn't yet know the way forward. My heart raced as I stood in front of them.

And then I took a breath and simply said:

"Here's what we know. Here's what we're still working out. And here's what we'll do next."

To my surprise, instead of losing faith, the room softened. People leaned in. They felt part of the process rather than excluded from it. That day I learned that authority isn't built on having every answer - it's built on creating clarity, honesty, and confidence in what comes next.

"When I took over a new team I wanted to create a shared vision within an improved team environment and make better use of the team's time. Gina devised and facilitated a super 4 hour workshop which she delivered at my office in Canary Wharf. The results of the session were lasting and far reaching. We had together created a way of making far better use of our individual and team time and manage the expectations of other departments.
